LOWER YOUR HANDICAP WITH CLUB FITTING

A common misconception in the golfing world is that club fitting is only beneficial for players with experience who play off a low handicap. You often hear beginners say that they’re ‘not good enough’ or that they will wait until they begin to improve before looking into club fitting.

Well, we’re here to tell you that there is no better time to get your clubs fitted than when you are just starting out.

If you were training to run a marathon, would you wear clown shoes on your first run? No, you would want the perfect shoe that will support and help you reach your goals. Golf is exactly the same.

If you have decided to take up golf, then club fitting should be high on your priority!

But what is club fitting you’re probably wondering? Club fitting is performed by experts who observe your natural swing using technology to help customise your clubs in order to play up your strengths and compensate for any weaknesses.

If you have recently started up golf,  you probably borrowed the set of rusty clubs from your parents’ garage that have been collecting cobwebs for 20 years. I mean, you certainly would have appealed to your hip-pocket, but these clubs will require you to adapt your swing to adjust for the clubs. Custom fitting works the other way around. Club fitters will personalise your clubs to adjust for you and your swing characteristics.

To delve deeper into the benefits of club fitting, we sat down and dissected the brain of one of Australia’s top 50 great Clubfitters — Warren Young.

“It’s funny how people hold off on getting their clubs fitted until they start to improve their game, when in fact nothing improves your game as rapidly as properly fitted clubs,” Young said. “Starting out with random clubs that aren’t suited to you can cause you to form bad habits early on that will negatively impact your swing from the outset”

When having your clubs fitted, the expert will look at a number of variables to select the best alterations to improve your swing. Young mentioned that, “fitters will focus on a number of factors such as your body shape and size, as well as the full mechanics of your swing.”

The four main customisations that are made in club fitting are:

  • Club length
  • Lie angle (the angle between the sole of the club and the shaft)
  • Grip thickness
  • Shaft Flex & weight

“The shaft flex and weight is typically what takes up the most time of your fitting session,” Young stated. “You’ll be required to hit a few balls in front of a monitor that will provide a full analytical breakdown of your swing; such as swing speed, launch angle and any observable spin.”

This all sounds quite complex, but that is what the experts are for!

And according to Young, “Some of the players I fitted lowered their handicap by four strokes!”

So, no matter your experience or skill level, club fitting is essential for any golfer who is looking to improve their game.
